Personal Development & Wellbeing
Schools deliver 'Personal Development and Wellbeing' (PD&W) to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed for their current and future success in their personal, academic and professional lives. It covers a wide range of learning and is delivered through a variety of curriculums and opportunities. At BGS we place great importance in this curriculum, whilst we provide the statutory curriculum responsibilities with RSHE, Citizenship, CEIAG, etc we go beyond this to deliver vital learning in areas that are specific to our BGS students and their development.

Events & Traditions
BGS is unique. Dating back beyond its Royal Charter from 1555, BGS is part of the local town's DNA and the modern school builds on this in supporting PD&W. It:
- embraces its uniqueness e.g. Charter Day and Puddox
- has an extensive and supportive wider network e.g. OBA
- celebrates achievement and excellence e.g. Prize Giving
- instils a sense of belonging e.g. house system
Life Skills
Life Skills is a timetabled hour long lesson delivered by trained teachers. Life Skills:
- delivers the explicit learning within Relationships and Sex Education e.g. consent
- leads on Citizenship delivery, including British Values e.g. rule of law
- has a strong emphasis on safeguarding and personal & online safety e.g. gambling
- champions Health Education including Wellbeing e.g. male body image
Tutor & WELL Time
Tutor Time happens every morning for 25 minutes and has a comprehensively sequenced programme designed specifically to support PD&W. It:
- has BGS Mindset session covering either study skills, character development or wellbeing e.g. dual coding and revision
- delivers explicit Financial Education e.g. understanding taxes
- provides assemblies covering current events, rewards, character development and British Values e.g. Black History Month
- ensures Careers Education exploring the world of work, self-development, raising aspiration and practical advice e.g. local labour market exploration
Subject Curriculums
Subject Curriculums recognise their role in delivering beyond exam specifications and use their curriculum to explore and embed key PD&W aspects. This supports students with transferable knowledge embedding the learning more deeply. They:
- map PD&W themes across their schemes of work e.g. food and nutrition.
- support the explicit delivery of key aspects of PD&W e.g. sexual reproduction in Science.
- provide increased opportunity to expand and develop student knowledge through super-curricular activity e.g. DIAL awards
- work to link Life Skills and Tutor Time learning into their own curriculums e.g. revision techniques explored when delivered at tutor time
Student Leadership
Student leadership ensures the school has a comprehensive and intentional approach in keeping students at the heart of their journey: We:
- embed student voice opportunities throughout the provision from feedback on the curriculum to listening to their wellbeing e.g. Big Voice
- empower our Senior Student Leadership Team to take an active role in decision making and managing student activities e.g. environment team
- enable our student council system of ambassadors to build student leadership opportunities throughout all school years and forms
- encourage wider opportunities through a myriad of club leadership, subject buddies, revision workshop leaders, charity work and community engagement, etc.
Enrichment
Enrichment at BGS prides itself on the myriad of opportunities it provides all students at our school. We:
- have a vast programme of trips and clubs e.g. the Grammar Gazette and Lincolnshire Show
- embed British Values through a series of termly engaging challenges e.g. Culture Day
- have a long tradition of supporting an International Schools approach e.g. Lessons from Auschwitz
- instil character development through a wealth of opportunities to grow, including reward systems e.g. BGS 100
