Boston Grammar School delivers the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award scheme to all interested students from year 9 onwards. It is a way to stretch individuals beyond their own expectations and broaden their horizons. It is a non-competitive scheme with three levels: BRONZE, SILVER and GOLD. Each level has four sections: VOLUNTEERING, PHYSICAL, SKILL and EXPEDITION. The GOLD Level has a fifth RESIDENTIAL section.
The DofE Award is a challenging programme of activities which will help you learn orienteering and camp-craft, teamwork and experience adventures. Achievements are widely recognised in education and employment. We expect Bronze participants to participate several training days prior to the expedition, which will take place on a Saturday. Silver and Gold require full practise expeditions prior to the qualifying expedition. Starting Silver without having done Bronze is possibly in years 10, 11 and 12. For exceptional candidates it is possible to start directly with Gold in year 12. In both instances participating in Bronze training days is mandatory as is the participation is the practise expeditions.
All DofE paperwork is dealt with by the DofE Manager, Mrs Abrams, at school. She will monitor the progress through each section and will be available at certain lunchtimes for support and queries. The award verifier in school is Miss Cook. She will check and verify all awards to make sure all requirements have been met so that the certificate and badge can be presented to the participant.
