The Grammar Gazette
The Grammar Gazette is the student-run newspaper produced regularly by Boston Grammar School. There are reporters and photographers from every year within the school, and the editor is a Sixth Form student, responsible for helping the younger students and compiling the articles into comprehensive editions.
The newspaper contains articles on both school and non-school related issues. In addition to write-ups of school occasions, such as Charter Day, and reports on school matches and events, the reporters also focus on topics including international events, computer games, the latest films and music, and sport. There is also room for debates and comment on politics, science and fashion. Student choice is paramount in the Gazette, enabling each reporter to take ownership of their material.
The team have worked closely with a local radio station to enable the students to present information to the town. Additionally, they participated in the Young Reporters Programme, producing work that appeared on BBC national radio. The students have also had the opportunity to interview various people, including Matt Warman when he was the local MP; Sir Jonathan Van Tam MBE, the former deputy chief medical officer for England; and Danny Butterfield, the professional football player.
Since its inception in 1992 the Grammar Gazette has gone from strength to strength and is, as stated by The Times, the longest continuously running newspaper in the country. It is available on-line to each student, and hard copies are available in the library. Several reporters have gone on to study journalism at university, including Harry Parkhill, a journalist and reporter for BBC Radio Lincolnshire, and Adam Shergold, a key sports reporter for the Daily Mail.
